Five Oakengates masters were in Sheffield on Saturday to compete in the Rotherham Masters Open Meet and for three of us it was the first time competing in a 50m pool! Chris Talbot, Rachel Reilly and Dave Clarke all swam in the first event - the combined Mens/Womens 400m freestyle. The first medal was not long in coming as Chris finished 2nd in her age group in a (converted) time of 7:07.04 - which was a PB.  In her age group Rachel was 4th in 6:10.31 and Dave also 4th in 5:03.53. Dave was back in action in event 10, the mens 200m individual medley and picked up the second medal of the day when he finished 2nd in a time of 2:42.06. Chris and Rachel both swam in event 13, the womens 50m freestyle were Chris finished 4th in 44.48 and Rachel 6th in 35.43. Craig Skinner and John Heuchan got their first swims of the day in event 18, the mens 100m freestyle. John was 6th in 01:09.70 (PB) and Craig was 7th in 1:03.07 (PB). Chris was first up in the afternoon session in the womans 100m freestyle, were she picked up her second medal of the day after finishing 3rd in a time of 1:39.36. Event 5 in the afternoon saw Craig and John swimming in the same heat of the 50m butterfly. Although they were 4 lanes apart, John swam a perfectly judged race to touch home 1/100th second in front of Craig (who in his defence wasn't wearing his swimming cap !!) In age groups however, Craig was 7th in a time of 32.72 and John 8th in 32.71. The final event of the day with Oakengates interest was the mens 50m freestyle, with Craig and John again competing. John was so fast off the block in his heat that he was in and out of the pool again before the other swimmers had (re)started - well when you're going, you just have to go !! Craig finished his heat in 7th place in a time of 28.20. A 'grand day out' was had by one and all.
